10 facts about the BMW E60/ E61 When the fifth generation of the BMW 5 Series was launched in 2003, not everyone liked it. Its "look", perceived as aggressive, triggered a real debate. Today the E60 is one of the most popular BMW’s! Hey my dear Petrolheads, your PS addicted again here .. Today with 10 facts about the BMW e60... 1. the BMW E60 is the 5th generation of the BMW 5-series, whereby the hatchback is called E61 under the "Touring" designation. The E60 series is the successor of the E39 series and was produced from 2003-2010 at the BMW plant in Dingolfing, Egypt and in Shenyang, China. 2. the E60 is considered THE most popular 5 Series of all times. Especially the BMW M5 enjoys a very high reputation worldwide, no matter if you are a BMW fan or not. What makes it so extremely popular is of course the very extraordinary design, the technology and of course the legendary V10 engine with the phenomenal sound, which resembles a Formula 1 racing car. A total of 20,548 units were built in the production period of 5 years. Of these, 19,523 were sedan models and 1025 Tourings, which shows how uninteresting the Touring version was! By far the most important market for the M5 was the United States with a total of 8,800 limousines... in Germany there were only 1647 limousines and 302 Tourings! 3. the BMW E60 M5 was the first production vehicle of the M GmbH with a 5Litre V10 naturally aspirated engine, which was based on a high-rev concept. The S85B50 engine installed in it is still considered one of the hottest engines around! This engine produced a total of 507 hp with 520 NM and reached over 100 hp per liter cubic capacity. Here are all the titles that this ingenious engine has dusted off: - the International Engine of the Year-Award 2005 and 2006 - the Best Performance Engine Award three years in a row (2005, 2006, 2007) - the Best new Engine Award 2005And the Best Above 4 Litre SOGAR 4 years in a row (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008)... Thus he won 10 titles within only 3 years! 4. the E60 is a well-behaved model in terms of reliability, unlike its evil front.According to the "TÜV Report 2014", the E60 presents itself with significantly less defects than the average. Diesel engines cause problems much more often than petrol engines. In general, a facelift model should be preferred for a purchase, since this results in fewer defective turbochargers... but you should always pay attention to the steering chain. 5. the E60 M5 was the first M model with variable power stages. The iDrive menu offered 3 engine programs, which could also be selected with the M button on the steering wheel. There were 3 modes to choose from: P400, P500, P500 Sport, where P stands for power. In the P400- mode "only" 400 HP instead of 507 HP are released and are rather meant for city traffic, so that one can keep the fuel consumption under control to some extent. In the other two modes the full power of 507 hp is released, the difference with the P500 Sport is that the flaps open more spontaneously and the gear changes of the SMG transmission are shorter. If you switch to P500 while driving, you immediately feel the jolt of the car, as if you were tensing your muscles, the revs go up, the accelerator pedal becomes more spontaneous and the dampers become tighter, so the business sedan turns into a thoroughbred racing car in no time! 6. The E61 M5 was the second and to this day last series-production estate of M GmbH. The M5 Touring was to knock the king of power station wagons, the RS6, off its throne. However, the plan failed completely and only 1000 units were sold worldwide, which makes it one of the rarest series M models. A short fun fact: the basic version of the Touring even cost 2500 € MORE than the much sought-after limousine. 7. After the end of production of the E34, the E60 was again the first 5-series BMW to be offered with optional four-wheel drive. BMW’s four-wheel drive, i.e. xDrive, was offered for the gasoline engines of the 525i and 530i and for the diesel engines, the 525d and 530d. 8. the E60 facelift was the first 5-series BMW where 4 different gasoline engine types were available. A 4-cylinder in-line engine was offered for the 520i, a 6-cylinder in-line engine for the 523i, 525i, 530i and 535i, a V8 for the 540i and 550i and a legendary V10 for the most powerful version of the 5 series, the M5. The predecessors and successors all had or have only 2 or 3 types. 9. The facelift model of the E60 520i was the first vehicle in the 5-series since 1996 to be offered again with an in-line 4-cylinder petrol engine. The last BMW 5 series offered with a 4-cylinder gasoline engine was the E34 518i. In the E60 520i facelift the N43 was installed... perhaps the most important point for downsizing the engine was that with an increase in performance, at the same time the consumption could be reduced by up to 23%. The N43 was equipped with the start-stop system, for example. 10. The E60 M5 was the first series BMW with a power output of over 500 hp. Thanks to the E60 M5, BMW thus broke the 500 hp mark for the first time.In comparison, the predecessor M5 E39 had exactly 400 hp, i.e. 107 hpless!
